Google and other search engines look at the content on your site to see what you're about. If you sell shoes, you'll want search engines to be able to know that. You should have "shoes" in your site title, in your descriptions, in some headlines, and within the content. You should have "shoes" within the code the images of shoes so that Google knows the images are images of shoes. All of this is on-site SEO. It is the on-site optimization that we do to enhance the relevant of your content. This is the foundation of ranking your site as it tells Google what keywords to index you for.
Over-optimization is a big problem in SEO. This is where someone puts the keyword in too many times. If every headline has the word shoes then that won't look natural and search engines will see this as "keyword stuffing".
